Introit and Lighting of the Candles

Let’s Sing to the Lord. Brazilian Folk Song. (CH 126).

Call to Worship

Let us sing to God a new song this day,
for God has done marvellous things.

Let us make a joyful noise to God,
in our singing and in our praise.

Let the oceans roar
and mountains sing for joy.

Let us come and worship our God.

Opening Prayer

O God,
you come to us afresh in the newness of this day.
We see you in the new face, the fresh flower,
the surprising sight, the startling sound.
As we gather to worship you this day,
open our eyes to see you anew.
Open our ears to hear your word as if for the first time.
Open our hearts to know your love in our lives.
Amen.

We sing: ‘Lord of our days’

  1. From many pasts you fashion one history,
    a people of God created to hold
    for all humankind the myst’ry of faith.
    Lord of our days, your people we are.

  2. From many wills you fashion community,
    a people of God created to love;
    being for all the promise of hope.
    Lord of our days, your people we are.

Chorus:
Lord of our days,
Lord of yesterday,
Lord, our Lord, for ever,
Your people we are.
Lord of our days,
Lord of yesterday,
Lord, our Lord, for ever,
Your people we are.

  1. From many calls you fashion one destiny,
    a people of God created to be
    for all humankind the body of Christ.
    Lord of our days, your people we are.

  2. From many dreams you fashion a unity,
    a people of God created to serve;
    bringing to all the witness of love,
    Lord of our days, your people we are.

Lord of our days,
Lord of yesterday,
Lord, our Lord, for ever,
Your people we are.
Lord of our days,
Lord of yesterday,
Lord, our Lord, for ever,
Your people we are.

Prayer of Confession and Restoration

For the right roads we avoided travelling,
and the kindly words we refused to share;
for the false gods who received our worship
and the true selves we have starved of love…
God, by your grace,
forgive us.

For the hidden hurts we have held too tightly,
and the promises which we never kept;
for the careless use of our time and money
and the lame excuses we should never have made,
God, by your grace,
forgive us.

(pause)

For all we should be
and all we can amend,
God, in your love,
renew us.

For all you have in store for us
and all you may demand of us,
God, in your love,
Prepare us.

For the life of the world
and the love of its people,
God, in your love,
Commit us.

Hear and believe these words of Jesus:

Your sins are forgiven.
Go in peace.
Come and follow me.

(pause)

Glory to the Creator who gives us life,
Glory to Jesus whose love remakes us,

Glory to the Spirit, companion on our journey.
Glory be to God. Amen

Passing of the Peace

The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

Choral Anthem

Jubilate Deo. Bullard/Mozart.

Scripture Reading:

Psalm 98

All:  Sing a new song to God,
who has done wonderful things,
whose right hand and holy arm
have brought salvation.

A:   God has made salvation known,
shown justice to the nations,
and remembered the house of the faithful
in truth and love.

B:   All the end of the earth have seen
the saving power of our God.

A:   Sing praise to God, all the earth;
ring out your joy.

B:   Sing psalms to God with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of music.

A:   With trumpets and the sound of the horn
acclaim the mighty God.

B:   Let the sea and all within it thunder;
the world and all its peoples.

A:   Let the rivers clap their hands
and the mountains ring out their joy
at the presence of the One who comes, who comes to rule the earth.

B:   God will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

All: Amen

Luke 20:27-38

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.”

Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed, they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead but of the living, for to him all of them are alive.”

May the Spirit of God open our eyes to see, our ears to hear,
and our hearts to understand.

Message

We sing: Love is the Touch of Intangible Joy

  1. Love is the touch of intangible joy;
    love is the force that no fear can destroy;
    love is the goodness we gladly applaud:
    God is where love is, for love is of God.

  2. Love is the lilt in a lingering voice;
    love is the hope that can make us rejoice;
    love is the cure for the frightened and flawed:
    God is where love is, for love is of God.

  3. Love is the light in the tunnel of pain;
    love is the will to be whole once again;
    love is the trust of a friend on the road:
    God is where love is, for love is of God.

  4. Love is the Maker, and Spirit, and Son;
    love is the kingdom their will has begun;
    Love is the pathway the saints all have trod:
    God is where love is, for love is of God.

Prayers of the People

Let us continue in prayer…

… And because we are here to meet with Jesus,
We join our words to those he taught us saying…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

Offering

Alternatively, there is an offering bowl near the lectern on the left-hand side as you exit the church.

Offering Prayer

We sing: Oh, the Life of the World

  1. Oh, the life of the world is a joy and a treasure,
    unfolding in beauty the green-growing tree,
    the changing of seasons in mountain and valley,
    the stars and the bright restless sea.

  2. Oh, the life of the world is a fountain of goodness
    overflowing in labour and passion and pain,
    in the sound of the city and the silence of wisdom,
    in the birth of a child once again.

  3. Oh, the life of the world is the source of our healing.
    It rises in laughter and wells up in song;
    it springs from the care of the poor and the broken
    and refreshes where justice is strong.

  4. So give thanks for the life and give love to the Maker,
    and rejoice in the gift of the bright risen Son,
    and walk in the peace and the power of the Spirit
    till the days of our living are done.
