Preacher: Rev Linda Driver
Easter 4A. Good Shepherd Sunday. White.
Welcome to Brougham Place Uniting Church.
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land
on which our church is built.
As you wait for worship to begin, please turn
your phone to silent.
Father, Hear the Prayer we Offer (Willis/Steiner)
Easter is over, but resurrection is here,
the tomb has been emptied
and death still cannot be contained,
the stone has rolled
and new life is on offer.
Jesus lives!
Now so do his people.
This is the place of life:
it does not depend on historical stories,
but on what God is doing now.
This is a place of life:
it does not function on past events
but on what God is bringing to life now.
This is a place of life,
and here God has chosen to say
“Yes!” to living,
“Yes!” to being,
“Yes!” to resurrection,
not once,
not a few times,
but forever.
This is a place of life.
This is home.
Life to the Brim, Life overflowing
Life pouring out in compassion and grace
Spirit of God, Well up within us
Bring us to life in this time and this place.
Life to the brim, Life overflowing
Life flooding in from below and above
Spirit of God, Pour out upon us
Bring us to faith and to hope and to love.
Come Holy Spirit
Lord and giver of life
Make us your people
Make us the body of Christ
Life to the brim, Life overflowing
Foretaste and sign of the healing to come
Spirit of God, Strengthen and guide us
Take us and use us ’til your kingdom’s come.
Living God, we yearn to find your loving presence close to us.
Help us through this Easter season to understand
how Christ is close to us and among us,
and find ways to share the abundance of life,
Amen.
…When we think we can achieve happiness and fulfilment on our own,
help us to reconsider our attitude.
When we try to close the door to exclude others from the blessings we have received,
help us to think again.
When we find it hard to trust in your continuing presence and care for us,
help us to renew our confidence in you.
Know that God is true to God’s name,
and will lead us along the right paths.
Know that even in valleys as dark as death,
we do not need to fear,
for God is with us and will guide us to a place of safety.
We trust in your kindness and love,
which will be with us each day of our lives.
Amen.
The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Children and Young People may go downstairs for Sunday School and Youth. Parents, you are welcome to join your child in Sunday School if you feel your child may need your assistance. Alternatively, you may wish for your child to remain with you for the duration of worship. Activity packs are available at the entrances.
The Lord’s My Shepherd (Chilcott)
“Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
The Gospel of Christ, Light of the world.
Thanks be to God.
The Lord’s my Shepherd I’ll not want
He makes me lie in pastures green
He leads me by the still still waters
His goodness restores my soul
And I will trust in You alone
And I will trust in You alone
For Your endless mercy follows me
Your goodness will lead me home
He guides my ways in righteousness
And He anoints my head with oil
And my cup it overflows with joy
I feast on His pure delights
And I will trust in You alone
And I will trust in You alone
For Your endless mercy follows me
Your goodness will lead me home
I will trust I will trust in You
I will trust I will trust in You
Endless mercy follows me
Goodness will lead me home
And though I walk the darkest path
I will not fear the evil one
For You are with me
And Your rod and staff
Are the comfort I need to know
And I will trust in You alone
And I will trust in You alone
For Your endless mercy follows me
Your goodness will lead me home
I will trust I will trust in You
I will trust I will trust in You
Endless mercy follows me
Goodness will lead me home
For Your endless mercy follows me
Your goodness will lead me home
For Your endless mercy follows me
Your goodness will lead me home
Including a Prayer for Anzac Day
Response:
Hear us
as we pray for this world
And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
To give electronically please go to bpuc.org/give
Alternatively, there is an offering bowl near the lectern on the left-hand side as you exit the church.
Generous God,
you provide for us and lead us in your care.
Receive the gifts we bring in trust and gratitude:
gifts to support survivors of domestic and family violence,
gifts to feed those who struggle to make ends meet
and gifts to further your ministry through this church and beyond.
May each one be used to share your abundant life with the world.
Amen.
In a church that’s moving forward,
this is where we long to be.
in a church with gifts abounding
and the grace to set them free.
in a church of many cultures,
in a church both old and young,
in a church of many accents
when the song of Christ is sung.
With a Lord who leads the mission
for a people on the way,
with a Lord who’s healing blindness,
lets the voiceless have their say.
with a Lord of every nation,
with a Lord of every place,
with a Lord who shines compassion
on to every tribe and race.
On a road that leads to wholeness
When we’re broken or unsure,
On a road to understanding
Where division finds a cure;
On a road where all may travel,
On a road where many roam,
On a road we walk together,
As we make our journey home.
The Lord is our shepherd and goes with us now.
With souls restored and lives renewed,
our cups overflow!
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us home.
We go forth with God’s love for all!
Go in peace,
refreshed and renewed in the eternal love of God.
In the name of Christ.
Amen.
