Brougham Place Uniting Church
Kardlayirdi Karnungga
A Light on the Hill
20 Sept, 2026
Preacher: Deidre Palmer
Welcome to Brougham Place Uniting Church.
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land
on which our church is built.
As you wait for worship to begin, please turn
your phone to silent.
We worship here on the land of the Kaurna people.
We honour their stewardship of this land from time immemorial and acknowledge these ancestral ties to land, waters, and community.
We pay our respects to Elders and community—
past, present, and emerging—
and extend this respect to First Nations people
from other places who might be with us today.
We hold that God is always drawing us into togetherness.
We commit to the renewal of our shared life
as First and Second Peoples from many lands.
As we light the candles, we are reminded with joy that the light of Christ has come into the world.
Believing that God made and loves the world,
we gather.
That it may be reshaped to fulfil God’s purposes,
we pray.
To seek a wisdom deeper than our own thinking,
we listen.
To honour God who gave us voice,
we worship.
Sing for God’s glory that colours the dawn of creation,
racing across the sky trailing bright clouds of elation;
Sun of delight succeeds the velvet of night,
warming the earth’s exultation.
Sing for God’s power that shatters the chains that would bind us,
Searing the darkness of fear and despair that could blind us;
Touching our shame with love that will not lay blame,
reaching out gently to find us.
Sing for God’s justice disturbing each easy illusion,
tearing down tyrants and putting our pride to confusion;
Lifeblood of right, resisting evil and slight,
offering freedom’s transfusion.
Sing for God’s saints who have travelled faith’s journey before us,
who, in our weariness, give us their hope to restore us;
In them we see the new creation to be,
spirit of love made flesh for us.
Before God with the people of God,
I confess to my brokenness:
to the ways I wound my life,
the lives of others,
and the life of the world.
May God forgive you, Christ renew you,
and the spirit enable you to grow in love.
Amen
Before God, with the people of God,
we confess to our brokenness:
to the ways we wound our lives,
the lives of others,
and the life of the world.
May God forgive you, Christ renew you,
and the Spirit enable you to grow in love.
Amen
Move among us, O God; give us life:
Let your people rejoice in you.
Make our hearts clean with us:
Renew us in mind and in spirit.
Give us again the joy of your help:
With your spirit of freedom sustain us.
The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord;
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.
Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul.
Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, let me bring your light;
and where there is sadness, ever joy.
Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul.
Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.
The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
In days to come
the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains
and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
Many peoples shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations
and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation;
neither shall they learn war any more.
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he began to speak and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur you may believe.
May the Spirit of God open our eyes to see, our ears to hear,
and our hearts to understand.
Community of Christ, who make the Cross your own,
live out your creed and risk your life for God alone:
the God who wears your face, to whom all worlds belong,
whose children are of every race and every song.
Community of Christ, look past the Church’s door
and see the refugee, the hungry, and the poor.
Take hands with the oppressed, the jobless in your street,
take towel and water, that you wash your neighbour’s feet.
Community of Christ, through whom the word must sound –
cry out for justice and for peace the whole world round:
disarm the powers that war and all that can destroy,
turn bombs to bread, and tears of anguish into joy.
When menace melts away, so shall God’s will be done,
the climate of the world be peace and Christ its Sun;
our currency be love and kindliness our law,
our food and faith be shared as one for evermore.
And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Alternatively, there is an offering bowl near the lectern on the left-hand side as you exit the church.
‘I have a dream’, a man once said,
’where all is perfect peace;
Where men and women, black and white,
Stand hand in hand, and all unite
* in freedom and in love’.
(* the last line of each verse is repeated)
But in this world of bitter strife
the dream can often fade;
reality seems dark as night,
we catch but glimpses of the light
Christ sheds on humankind.
Fierce persecution, war, and hate
are raging everywhere;
God calls us now to pay the price
Through struggles and through sacrifice
of standing for the right.
So dream the dreams and sing the songs,
but never be content;
for thoughts and words don’t ease the pain:
unless there’s action, all is vain;
faith proves itself in deeds.
Lord, give us vision, make us strong,
help us to do your will;
don’t let us rest until we see
your love throughout humanity
uniting us in peace.
Shalom to you now, shalom, my friends.
May God’s full mercies bless you, my friends.
In all your living and through your loving,
Christ be your shalom, Christ be your shalom.
(Sing twice)
Come and share morning tea together, in the basement. There are stairs behind the organ and a ramp between the church and the car park. All are welcome!
