A Light on the Hill

August 2, 2026

Preacher: Ian Price

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost. Green

Welcome to Brougham Place Uniting Church.

We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land on which our church is built.

In the silence, let us prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

Call to Worship

In the midst of our busyness,

Jesus invites us to stay with him.

When we are weary,

Jesus invites us to stay with him.

When we are in need of sustenance,

Jesus invites us to stay with him.

However we come, Jesus invites us to stay.

So, we come to worship.

We sing: Gather us in

1.

Here in this place new light is streaming,

now is the darkness vanished away,

see, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,

brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;

gather us in, the blind and the lame;

call to us now, and we shall awaken,

we shall arise at the sound of our name.

2.

We are the young, our lives are a mystery;

we are the old, who yearn for your face;

we have been sung throughout all of history,

called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in, the rich and the haughty;

gather us in, the proud and the strong;

give us a heart so meek and so lowly,

give us the courage to enter the song.

3.

Not in the dark of buildings confining,

not in some heaven light years away,

but here in this space, the new light is shining,

now is the kingdom, now is the day.

Gather us in, and hold us forever;

gather us in, and make us your own;

gather us in, all peoples together,

fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

Opening Prayer

Welcoming God, you are always close beside us.

You invite us to be with you.

Receive our praise and our prayers,

our laments and our longings,

so that we may receive your words of love

and respond to your call.

Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Word of Grace

The grace and love of God keep us

free to live and love and serve.

So with faith we affirm:

we are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

We sing: Let us break bread together

1.

Let us break bread together with the Lord!

Let us break bread together with the Lord!

As we travel through this land,

all God’s children hand in hand,

Lord, fill all our living with your life.

2.

Let us drink wine together with the Lord!

Let us drink wine together with the Lord!

As we travel through this land,

all God’s children hand in hand,

Lord, fill all our living with your life.

3.

Let us sing songs together with the Lord!

Let us sing songs together with the Lord!

As we travel through this land,

all God’s children hand in hand,

Lord, fill all our living with your life.

4.

Let us all work together for the Lord!

Let us all work together for the Lord!

As we travel through this land,

all God’s children hand in hand,

Lord, fill all our living with your life.

Holy Communion

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

The Great Thanksgiving

May God be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts!

We lift them up to our God.

Let us give thanks to God our Creator.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

… And so we praise you

with the faithful of every time and place,

joining in the eternal hymn, singing:

You are holy, you are whole.

You are always ever more

than we ever understand.

You are always at hand.

Blessed are you coming near;

blessed are you coming here

to your church in wine and bread,

raised from soil, raised from dead.

You are holy, you are wholeness,

you are present, let the cosmos praise you, Lord!

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

hallelujah, our Lord!

The Breaking of Bread

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

The bread we break is a sharing in the Body of Christ.

And the cup we take is a sharing in the blood of Christ.

The gifts of God for the people of God.

This morning you are invited to form a circle to share the elements as a sign of our unity. Please eat the bread as you receive it but hold the cup until all have been served and we will share it together. Gluten free bread is available.

Prayer after Communion

We sing: For the beauty of the earth.

1.

For the beauty of the earth,

for the beauty of the skies,

for the love which from our birth

over and around us lies,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

2.

For the beauty of each hour

of the day and of the night,

hill and vale, and tree and flower,

sun and moon and stars of light,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

3.

For the joy of ear and eye,

for the heart and mind’s delight,

for the mystic harmony

linking sense to sound and sight,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

4.

For the joy of human love,

brother, sister, parent, child,

friends on earth and friends above,

for all gentle thoughts and mild,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

5.

For each perfect gift divine

to the world so freely given,

graces all of your design,

flowers of earth and buds of heaven,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

6.

For the church that evermore,

lifting holy hands above,

offers up on every shore,

the pure sacrifice of love,

Lord of all, to you we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 14:13-21

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

The living Word of Christ,

Light of the world.

Thanks be to God.

Message:

Song: Make love happen

Prayers of the People

We pray today for those who are in special need of help and healing:

those facing life-threatening illness or injury;

those too unwell to work or support their family;

those numbed by trauma, distress, or heartache.

Hear our prayers for healing.

We think of those who are weary:

those working beyond their energy levels and capabilities;

those seeking justice, worn down by apathy or opposition;

those caring for loved ones around the clock.

Hear our prayers for respite.

We pray for leaders in the church and the community;

for courage when their moral and ethical stands are challenged;

for wisdom when they make decisions around complex issues;

for compassion towards the vulnerable among them.

Hear our prayers for our leaders.

We pray for ourselves:

for empathy when others around us are in need;

for trust in you when we are uncertain of the best way ahead;

for hope when the future seems bleak.

Hear our prayers for ourselves.

Thank you for knowing our needs before we ask,

for your compassion, so much deeper than ours

and for your blessing, which enlarges all we bring to you.

Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We sing: For you, deep stillness of the silent inland

For you, deep stillness of the silent inland;

for you, deep blue of the desert skies;

for you, flame red of the rocks and stones;

for you, sweet water from hidden springs.

From the edges, seek the heartlands,

and when you’re burnt by the journey,

may the cool winds of the hovering Spirit

soothe and replenish you.

In the name of Christ,

In the name of Christ.

(repeat once)

Sending Forth and Benediction
