Brougham Place Uniting Church
Kardlayirdi Karnungga
A Light on the Hill

Preacher: Rev Linda Driver
Easter 3. White
Welcome to Brougham Place Uniting Church.
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land
on which our church is built.
As you wait for worship to begin, please turn
your phone to silent.
The candles are lit as we sing
Wa wa wa Emimimo,
Wa wa wa Alagbara,
Wao, wao, wao.
Come, O Holy Spirit, come.
Come, Almighty Spirit, come.
Come, come, come.
Whether our journey has been a long one or a short one,
help us to recognise God’s presence here today.
Whether we feel close to God or far off,
help us to recognise God’s presence here today.
In a world that often seems devoid,
or perhaps, unaware, of God’s presence,
help us to recognise God’s presence here today.
Let us worship God – Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer,
knowing their presence with us as we do so.
Amen.
Holy One, Holy Three,
We praise you for your majesty and power as we wonder at your creation.
We thank you for all your gifts to us,
particularly that of Jesus
and the gift of life to us through his rising.
There are many things that we are thankful for today…
You are invited to name things that you are thankful for.
For the things that have been said
and those that have remained unsaid,
we thank you, loving and gracious God.
Amen.
You are holy,
you are whole.
You are always evermore
than we ever understand.
You are always at hand.
Blessèd are you coming near;
blessèd are you coming here
to your church in wine and bread,
raised from soil,
raised from dead.
You are holy,
you are wholeness,
you are present,
let the cosmos praise you, Lord!
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
hallelujah, hallelujah, our Lord!
hallelujah, hallelujah, our Lord!
Merciful God,
there are times when hope feels distant,
and our understanding falters.
Like the companions on the road to Emmaus,
we speak from confusion and disappointment.
We carry grief that clouds our vision and discouragement that dims our trust.
At times, we fail to recognise your presence walking beside us,
listening to our stories,
and opening new meaning before us.
In this quiet moment,
we bring before you all that weighs upon our hearts.
Silence is held.
The risen Christ comes alongside us
in our confusion and grief,
in our questions and conversations.
We are not left alone.
Christ listens,
Christ walks with us,
and Christ reveals new life among us.
Christ is risen.
Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!
The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
The Gospel of Christ, Light of the world.
Thanks be to God.
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
be there at our waking and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
be there at our labours and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
Holy One, who gives us hope,
we pray for those who have lost hope:
for those in grief for the loss of loved ones,
for those who have lost jobs or homes,
for those unsure what their next step will be.
And in the silence, we pray for others close to our hearts who need to feel your presence in their lives.
Silence
Hear these prayers—those spoken and those cried out in the silence of our hearts.
Speak the light of your hope, however dim, into these situations.
May we cling to that hope and share it with others. Amen.
And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

God who sets us on a journey
To discover dream and grow
Lead us as You led Your people
In the desert long ago
Journey inward journey outward
Stir the spirit stretch the mind
Love for God and self and neighbour
Marks the way that Christ defined
Exploration brings new insights
Changes choices we must face
Give us wisdom in deciding
Mindful always of Your grace
Should we stumble lose our bearings
Find it hard to know what’s right
We regain our true direction
Focused on the Jesus light
End our longing for the old days
Grant the vision that we lack
Once we’ve started on this journey
There can be no turning back
Let us travel light discarding
Excess baggage from our past
Cherish only what’s essential
Choosing treasure that will last
When we set up camp and settle
To avoid love’s risk and pain
You disturb complacent comfort
Pull the tent pegs up again
Keep us travelling in the knowledge
You are always at our side
Give us courage for the journey
Christ our goal and Christ our guide
As we go into the week,
may our hearts be warmed
as we make room for Jesus,
so that he can meet us where we are.
May he help us understand when we don’t get it.
And may we share that knowledge with others.
Amen.
May the feet of God walk with you,
and his hand hold you tight.
May the eye of God rest on you,
and his ear hear your cry.
May the smile of God be for you,
and his breath give you life.
May the Child of God grow in you,
and his love bring you home.
Come and share our special ‘0’ Birthday morning tea together, in the basement. There are stairs behind the organ and a ramp between the church and the car park. All are welcome!
