What God Ordains is Always Good (TiS 109 Rodigast/Gastor)

Call to Worship

Jesus moves through all the barriers to grace.

He stands in our midst, divine love, bringer of hope, reassurance and peace;

We bring all our uncertainties and fears.

Jesus the Risen One, reaches out to greet us.

Holding out healing hands, so newly wounded.

Realistic but loving,

Pained but forgiving,

Scarred but ready to embrace.

Jesus the Risen One, reaches out to greet us.

We respond in wonder and joy, surprised by the knowledge of God’s enduring presence that transcends every darkness and every loss of hope.

Prayer

Jesus Christ,

Risen and glorious Lord,

You break down the walls of fear and doubt that imprison us all.

You speak words of peace that restore us to wholeness.

Come with your new life.

Come with your offer of peace.

Come with your guiding power

and claim us anew. Amen

We sing: Life to the Brim

1.

Life to the Brim, Life overflowing

Life pouring out in compassion and grace

Spirit of God, Well up within us

Bring us to life in this time and this place.

2.

Life to the brim, Life overflowing

Life flooding in from below and above

Spirit of God, pour out upon us

Bring us to faith and to hope and to love.

Come Holy Spirit

Lord and giver of life

Make us your people

Make us the body of Christ

3.

Life to the brim, Life overflowing

Foretaste and sign of the healing to come

Spirit of God, Strengthen and guide us

Take us and use us ’til your kingdom’s come.

Prayer of Confession

In this moment, in this place,

where all is wonder and all is grace—

we pause.

We become aware of ourselves before God,

not as we pretend to be,

but as we are.

We confess that we do not always live as people of wonder.

We rush past what is sacred.

We close ourselves to mystery.

In this moment, in this place,

where silence waits—

we notice the noise we carry within us.

We confess that we fill our lives with distraction,

avoiding the deeper questions,

resisting what we do not understand.

In this moment, in this place,

where we are one—

we remember how easily we forget.

We confess the ways we turn from one another,

withdrawing, judging, holding back love.

And in this moment, in this place,

we name what we cannot yet put into words—

the quiet truths of our hearts.

(silence)

God of grace, meet us here.

Not to condemn, but to renew.

Not to explain, but to transform.

Words Of Wisdom and Assurance

Hear this good news:

The Living Christ comes to us

not when we are certain,

but while we are still wondering,

still searching,

still becoming.

Christ meets us here—

not to judge or measure us,

but to draw us deeper into life.

And speaks peace.

Peace to all that feels uncertain within us.

Peace to all that is still unfinished.

Peace to the quiet ache for wholeness.

This is the grace of resurrection:

that even now,

we are being made new.

Not all at once,

not all resolved—

but gently, deeply, truly.

We are held in God’s love.

We are being made whole.

We belong to the life of Christ.

Amen.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of our God be with you.

And also with you.

We sing: Breathe on me breath of God

1.

Breathe on me, breath of God,

fill me with life anew,

that I may love all that you love

and do what you would do.

2.

Breathe on me, breath of God

until my heart is pure,

until with you I will one will,

to do and to endure.

3.

Breathe on me, breath of God,

and all my life refine,

until this earthly part of me

glows with your fire divine.

4.

Breathe on me, breath of God;

so shall I never die,

but live with you the perfect life

of your eternity.

Choral Anthem

Now the green blade rises (AA 38 Trad. Crum)

Scripture Reading: John 20:19-31

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

May the Spirit of God open our eyes to see, our ears to hear,

and our hearts to understand.

Message

We sing: When our futures are uncertain

1.

When our futures are uncertain,

when our Christian life is tough,

when our worries fill our thinking,

when our hope is not enough –

then the rallying cry of Thomas

rises high above the crowd:

’Give your lives, your all, for Jesus.

Join him on this narrow road.’

2.

When the many signs confuse me –

aimless wanderings fill my day –

then I pray the prayer with Thomas:

‘Gracious Lord, show us the way.’

Suddenly the spell is broken!

Truth and Life in Christ, I see:

’I’m the way that you are seeking,

Come, disciple, follow me.’

3.

When I miss the great adventure,

When belief is too absurd –

deep inside, I need, with Thomas

simple faith to be assured.

Then, the resurrected Jesus

brings to me his hands and side.

Overwhelming love engulfs me!

Death is dead and Christ’s alive!

4.

Come, inspire this feeble vision,

put your daring in our minds:

words to motivate disciples,

lives that challenge humankind.

Like Saint Thomas, full of passion,

clear our gloom that we may see –

Christ, our Lord, alive forever!

Christ, my God, alive in me!

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.
