Introit and Lighting of the Candles

Christ is the World’s True Light TiS 246

Call to Worship

Come,
not to find the light
but be the light
we already are.

Come,
not to find the salt
but be the salt
we already are.

Come,
not to find God
for God is already with us.

Come,
let us worship!

Opening Prayer

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
we come to you God.

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
we love you Jesus.

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
we need your spirit.

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
help us make a difference.

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
help us shine your love.

Salt and light,
flavoured and bright,
help us, day by day.
Amen

We sing: Gather Us In

  1. Here in this place new light is streaming,
    now is the darkness vanished away,
    see, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,
    brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;
gather us in, the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken,
we shall arise at the sound of our name.

  1. We are the young, our lives are a mystery;
    we are the old, who yearn for your face;
    we have been sung throughout all of history,
    called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in, the rich and the haughty;
gather us in, the proud and the strong;
give us a heart so meek and so lowly,
give us the courage to enter the song.

  1. Not in the dark of buildings confining,
    not in some heaven light years away,
    but here in this space, the new light is shining,
    now is the kingdom, now is the day.

Gather us in, and hold us forever;
gather us in, and make us your own;
gather us in, all peoples together,
fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God,
we are sorry for all the things we have done that hurt others.
We are sorry for the things we have done that have hurt ourselves.
We are sorry for the things we should have done but left undone.

A time of silence

Words of Grace

God’s mercy is for you, we are forgiven through God’s love.
Rest in that forgiveness and know that you are made new. Amen.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

The Gospel of Christ, Light of the world.
Thanks be to God.

Children’s Time (Exploring the Theme)

We conclude this time with a blessing of all those serving in the ministries of our Church and beyond.

Children and Young People may go downstairs for Sunday School and Youth. Parents, you are welcome to join your child in Sunday School if you feel your child may need your assistance. Alternatively, you may wish for your child to remain with you for the duration of worship. Activity packs are available at the entrances.

Choral Anthem

Shine on Me (R Dilworth)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:17-20

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

May the Spirit of God open our eyes to see, our ears to hear,
and our hearts to understand.

Message

We sing: As a Fire is Meant for Burning

  1. As a fire is meant for burning
    with a bright and warming flame,
    so the Church is meant for mission,
    giving glory to God’s name.
    Preaching Christ, and not our customs,
    let us build a bridge of care,
    joining hands across the nations,
    finding neighbours everywhere.

  2. We are learners; we are teachers;
    we are pilgrims on the way.
    We are seekers; we are givers;
    we are vessels made of clay.
    By our gentle, loving actions,
    we will show that Christ is light.
    In a humble, listening Spirit,
    we will live to God’s delight.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

Offering

Offering Prayer

We sing: This Little Light of Mine

  1. This little light of mine,
    I’m goin’-a let it shine,
    this little light of mine,
    I’m goin’-a let it shine;
    this little light of mine,
    I’m goin’-a let it shine,
    let it shine, let it shine,
    let it shine.

  2. Everywhere I go …
    I’m goin’-a let it shine,
    everywhere I go,
    I’m goin’-a let it shine;
    everywhere I go,
    I’m goin’-a let it shine,
    let it shine, let it shine,
    let it shine.
