Call to Worship

Opening Prayer

Sung Confession: Dear Father, Lord of Humankind

Together in Song 598

  1. Dear Father, Lord of humankind,
    forgive our foolish ways;
    reclothe us in our rightful mind:
    in purer lives thy service find,
    in deeper reverence, praise,
    in deeper reverence, praise.

  2. In simple trust like theirs who heard,
    beside the Syrian sea,
    the gracious calling of the Lord,
    let us, like them, without a word
    rise up and follow thee,
    rise up and follow thee.

  3. O sabbath rest by Galilee!
    O calm of hills above,
    where Jesus knelt to share with thee
    the silence of eternity,
    interpreted by love,
    interpreted by love!

  4. Drop thy still dews of quietness,
    till all our strivings cease;
    take from our souls the strain and stress,
    and let our ordered lives confess
    the beauty of thy peace,
    the beauty of thy peace.

  5. Breathe through the heats of our desire
    thy coolness and thy balm;
    let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
    speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
    O still small voice of calm,
    O still small voice of calm.

Word of Assurance

The ever-present Christ is full of compassion and love. All who turn to him are free to life in his grace and power. So, know deep in your being, we are forgiven people.
Thanks be to God.

Passing of the Peace

Scripture Readings

Responsive Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice; the earth melts.

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Come, behold the works of the LORD; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.”

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Colossians 1:11-20

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from Christ’s glorious power, so that you may have all endurance and patience, joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.

He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers–all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

From this shines forth the Word of God.
Thanks be to God.

We sing: Crown him with many thorns

Together in Song 228

  1. Crown him with many crowns,
    the Lamb upon the throne;
    hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns
    all music but its own:
    awake, my soul, and sing
    of him who died for me,
    and hail him as your chosen king
    through all eternity.

  2. Crown him the Son of God
    before the world began:
    and we who tread where he has trod
    crown him the Son of Man,
    who every grief has known
    that wrings the human breast,
    and takes and bears them for his own,
    that all in him may rest.

  3. Crown him the Lord of love;
    behold his hands and side,
    those wounds yet visible above
    in beauty glorified:
    no angel there on high
    can fully bear that sight,
    but downward bends a burning eye
    at mysteries so bright.

  4. Crown him the Lord of life,
    who triumphed o’er the grave,
    and rose victorious in the strife
    for those he came to save:
    his glories now we sing
    who died, and rose on high;
    who died eternal life to bring,
    and lives that death may die.

Message

A Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own, but yours.

Put me to what you will,
rank me with whom you will.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by you
or laid aside for you,
exalted for you
or brought low for you.

Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things,
let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
you are mine, and I am yours. So be it.

And the covenant which
I have made on earth,
Let it also be ratified in heaven. Amen.

John Wesley (Modern Interpretation)

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

Alternatively, there is an offering bowl near the lectern on the left-hand side as you exit the church.

Offering Prayer

We sing: My Heart and Voice I Raise

Together in Song 225

  1. My heart and voice I raise
    to spread Messiah’s praise,
    Messiah’s praise let all repeat:
    the universal Lord
    by whose almighty word
    creation rose in form complete.

  2. A servant’s form he wore,
    and in his body bore
    our dreadful curse on Calvary:
    he like a victim stood
    and poured his sacred blood
    to set the guilty captives free.

  3. But soon the Victor rose
    triumphant o’er his foes
    and let the vanquished host in chains:
    he threw their empire down,
    his foes compelled to own
    o’er all the great Messiah reigns.

  4. With mercy’s mildest grace
    he governs all our race
    in wisdom, righteousness and love;
    who to Messiah fly
    shall find redemption nigh,
    and all his great salvation prove.

  5. Hail, Saviour, Prince of Peace!
    Your kingdom shall increase
    till all the world your glory see,
    and righteousness abound
    as the great deep profound,
    and fill the earth with purity.
