Come God’s People Sing For Joy

Call to Worship

We come this day trusting in God’s grace,
confident of Jesus’ love,
and aware of the Spirit’s guidance.
We come this day anxious and unsure,
hurting and frightened, confused and hopeful.
We come this day to listen,
to hear, and to speak out.
We come this day to Break the Silence!

We sing: Come As You Are

  1. Come as you are, that’s how I want you.
    Come as you are, feel quite at home,
    Close to my heart, loved and forgiven.
    Come as you are, why stand alone?

  2. No need to fear, love sets no limits;
    no need to fear, love never ends;
    don’t run away shamed and disheartened,
    rest in my love, trust me again.

  3. I came to call sinners, not just the righteous;
    I came to bring peace, not to condemn.
    Each time you fail to live by my promise,
    why do you think I’d love you the less?

  4. Come as you are; that’s how I love you;
    come as you are, trust me again.
    Nothing can change the love that I bear you;
    all will be well, just come as you are.

Christ the Lord is Risen Again

Scripture Reading: John 20:19-31

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

The Gospel of Christ, Light of the world.
Thanks be to God.

Message

We sing: Help Us To Accept Each Other

  1. Help us accept each other
    as Christ accepted us;
    teach us as sister, brother,
    each person to embrace.
    Be present, Lord, among us
    and bring us to believe
    we are ourselves accepted
    and meant to love and live.

  2. Teach us, O Lord, your lessons,
    as in our daily life
    we struggle to be human
    and search for hope and faith.
    Teach us to care for people,
    for all – not just for some,
    to love them as we find them
    or as they may become.

  3. Let your acceptance change us,
    so that we may be moved
    in living situations
    to do the truth in love;
    to practise your acceptance
    until we know by heart
    the table of forgiveness
    and laughter’s healing art.

  4. Lord, for today’s encounters
    with all who are in need,
    who hunger for acceptance,
    for righteousness and bread,
    we need new eyes for seeing,
    new hands for holding on:
    renew us with your Spirit;
    Lord, free us, make us one!

Committing Ourselves to Change

We stand in solidarity with those who have been victims. We promise to be open to their stories, and with the grace of God, to listen without judgment. We look forward with hope, trusting in God’s ability to give us strength to listen with courage, and to be silent no longer.

Gracious God, help us to be aware of your loving disruption of our lives. Give us the courage to work with you, and with each other, to transform our hurting world. Empower us with your Spirit that we might break the silence of sexual violence. Help us listen and move together, from fear and pain towards your realm of peace and justice.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Prayers of the People

Father, we join with Christians across the world in recognising the death of Pope Francis and we pray for the Catholic Church as they set about their period of burial, ritual and decision making. We uphold this humble man who saw all people as equal.

Dear Lord, hear our prayer … (period of silence)

Lord, as we commemorate the 110th Anniversary this weekend of the ill-fated landing at Gallipoli, we bring to you all serving men and women in our Armed Forces as they seek to protect the freedoms of our land

Oh Jesus, accept our prayer … (period of silence)

Gentle Jesus we bring to you survivors of rape, sexual assault, child abuse and gender-based violence. Protect and strengthen these survivors as they seek to rebuild their lives

Dear God, honour this plea … (period of silence)

Our redeemer, we bring to you all those who have sought redress from the Uniting Church for past inappropriate acts. Sustain and fortify them as they pursue justice.

Oh God, hear our prayer … (period of silence)

Dear Jesus, we ask that you bring discernment and wisdom to all Redress investigators and decision makers across the country as they weight difficult evidence

Oh Father, accept our prayer … (period of silence)

Jesus who brings us light, we bring to you all who experience a power imbalance whether it be in their work, their relationships or in social settings. Be with the marginalised, the oppressed, the down trodden and the forgotten as they seek a fair go and justice for their situation

God, honour this entreaty … (period of silence)

Oh Lord, we bring you our world of conflict, inequality, refugee populations, skewed politics and the misuse of power

Dear God, bring peace to war torn countries … (period of silence)

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

Offering Prayer

We sing: Love Makes A Way

  1. Love makes a way to open the door,
    love spreads the welcome mat down on the floor,
    love feeds the hungry and sits with the poor,
    the greatest of all is love.

  2. Love clothes the cold and tends to the frail,
    visits the sick and the pris’ner in jail,
    love sees a need and answers the call,
    the greatest of all is love.

        Bridge:

        Love isn’t jealous, impatient or proud.
        Love keeps no record of wrongs that are done.
        True love rejoices when goodness prevails
        love never fails.

  3. Love sees a stranger and acts as a friend,
    love breaks down walls, finds bridges to mend,
    love chooses life and sticks to the end,
    the greatest of all is love.
    The greatest of all is love.

Sending Forth and Benediction

We sing: For You Deep Stillness

For you, deep stillness of the silent inland;
for you, deep blue of the desert skies;
for you, flame red of the rocks and stones;
for you, sweet water from hidden springs.

From the edges, seek the heartlands,
and when you’re burnt by the journey,
may the cool winds of the hovering Spirit
soothe and replenish you.
In the name of Christ,
In the name of Christ.
