Call to Worship

As we come to worship today,
our waiting is over.
Kindness, Sharing, Connection, Compassion: these have been our signposts.

Our waiting is over,
for the Christ-child is in our midst born into hearts and minds showing us the way.

Let us join together in worship
And celebrate,
our waiting is over!
Let us worship God!

Opening Prayer

We Sing: Angels from the Realms of Glory

  1. Angels, from the realms of glory,
    wing your flight o’er all the earth:
    heralds of creation’s story,
    now proclaim Messiah’s birth:

    come and worship Christ, the new-born King,
    come and worship
    , worship Christ, the new-born King.

  2. Shepherds, in the field abiding,
    watching over flocks by night,
    God with us is now residing;
    yonder shines the infant Light:

    come and worship Christ, the new-born King,
    come and worship
    , worship Christ, the new-born King.

  3. Wise men, leave your contemplations,
    brighter visions beam afar;
    seek the great Desire of nations,
    you have seen his natal star:

    come and worship Christ, the new-born King,
    come and worship
    , worship Christ, the new-born King.

  4. Though an infant now we view him,
    he shall fill his Father’s throne,
    gather all the nations to him:
    every knee shall then bow down:

    come and worship Christ, the new-born King,
    come and worship
    , worship Christ, the new-born King.

We Sing: Good Christians All Rejoice

  1. Good Christians all, rejoice
    with heart and soul and voice;
    listen well to what we say:
    Jesus Christ is born today,
    ox and ass before him bow,
    and he is in the manger now!
    Christ is born today,
    Christ is born today.

  2. Good Christians all, rejoice
    with heart and soul and voice;
    now you hear of endless bliss,
    Jesus Christ was born for this;
    he has opened heaven’s door
    and you are blest for evermore,
    Christ was born for this,
    Christ was born for this.

  3. Good Christians all, rejoice
    with heart and soul and voice;
    now you need not fear the grave:
    Jesus Christ was born to save,
    calls you one and calls you all,
    to gain his everlasting hall;
    Christ was born to save,
    Christ was born to save.

Sermon

We Sing: An Ancient Story Told

  1. An ancient story told
    but each year heard anew.
    A tale of love which has no end,
    divinely true.
    What trust! God gives the son
    to those considered least,
    in poverty and risk he comes:
    the hungry feast.

  2. Abundant grace enfleshed
    in time of gracelessness.
    The refugee, the homeless ones,
    share God’s distress.
    Not in a palace born,
    nor privilege nor power,
    but at this birth death lost its grip,
    a holy hour.

  3. This is the God we know,
    Foundation of all love,
    who came to us in common life,
    not far above.
    He lived the life we live,
    with all its stress and joy.
    We see the simple sign of this:
    a baby boy.

Prayers of the People

…And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

We Sing: Hark! The Herald Angel Sings

  1. Hark! the herald angels sing
    glory to the new-born King,
    peace on earth, and mercy mild,
    God and sinners reconciled.
    Joyful, all you nations, rise,
    join the triumph of the skies;
    with the angelic host proclaim,
    ‘Christ is born in Bethlehem’.

    Hark! the herald angels sing
    glory to the new-born King.

  2. Christ, by highest heaven adored,
    Christ, the everlasting Lord,
    late in time behold him come,
    offspring of a virgin’s womb:
    veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
    hail the incarnate Deity,
    pleased in human flesh to dwell,
    Jesus, our Immanuel.

    Hark! the herald angels sing
    glory to the new born King.

  3. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
    Hail the Sun of righteousness!
    Light and life to all he brings,
    risen with healing in his wings:
    mild he lays his glory by,
    born that we no more need die,
    born to raise us from the earth,
    born to give us second birth.

    Hark! the herald angels sing
    glory to the new born King.
