The First Sunday in Lent
March 6th, 2022
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the
traditional carers of the land on which our church is
built.
Time to Turn
Lent invites us to journey with God. It is a
time to turn – towards God and towards our inner life. As we follow this
journey, we are invited to consider the turning of the path towards
Jerusalem and the stories of turning we encounter along the
way.

Call to Worship
Prayer
Loving God,
we come together to journey the path of Lent
– with all of its twists and turns.
We come with of our own paths, hopes, needs, desires
– and our shared path as community.
Accompany us, we pray,
that we may orient our living to your presence,
and our paths to your loving kindness.
With hope and faith we pray, Amen.
We Sing: Take This Moment
Take this moment, sign, and space,
take my friends around.
Here among us make the place
where your love is found.
Take the time to call my name,
take the time to mend
who I am and what I’ve been,
all I’ve failed to tend.
Take the tiredness of my days,
take my past regret,
letting your forgiveness touch
all I can’t forget.
Take the little child in me,
scared of growing old.
Help me here to find my worth,
made in Christ’s own mould.
Take my talents, take my skills,
take what’s yet to be.
Let my life be yours, and yet,
let it still be me.

Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance
God does not coerce nor demand,
but calls and encourages.
Our God knows us and loves us from the beginning,
and knows and loves us to the end;
and on this path of living,
God sends the Spirit to inspire, Christ to show the way,
and always offers welcome and embrace, to each and every one.
Thanks be to God.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
Passing of the Peace
The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

Choral Anthem
How Lovely are the Messengers by Mendelssohn
Scripture Reading: Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by
the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the
devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over,
he was famished. The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God,
command this stone to become a loaf of bread.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It
is written, “One does not live by bread alone.”’
Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms
of the world. And the devil said to him, ‘To you I will give their glory
and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it
to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be
yours.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It is written,
“Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”’
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of
the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself
down from here, for it is written,
“He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you”,
and
“On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your
foot against a stone.” ’
Jesus answered him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the
test.”’ When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him
until an opportune time.
The Gospel of Christ, light of the world.
Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People
We Sing: As the Deer Pants for the Water
As the deer pants for the water,
so my soul longs after you.
You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship you.
You alone are my strength, my shield,
to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship you.
I want you more than gold or silver,
only you can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy-giver
And the apple of my eye.
You alone are my strength, my shield,
to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship you.
You’re my friend and you are my brother
even though you are a King.
I love you more than any other,
so much more than anything.
You alone are my strength, my shield,
to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship you.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts!
We lift them up to our God.
Let us give thanks to God our Creator.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
… And so we raise our voices, together with heaven and earth, your
people throughout all time and in all places, and all of creation,
saying:
Holy, holy, holy God, of all creation and life,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of God.
Hosanna in the highest!
The Lord’s Prayer
…let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us in the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Prayer After Communion
We Sing: Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
naught be all else to me, save that thou art
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father, thy child let me be;
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.
Riches I scorn and the world’s empty praise,
thou my inheritance, now and always:
thou and thou only the first in my heart;
high King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O ruler of all.
