The First Sunday of Advent
November 28th, 2021
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land on which our church is built.

In this Advent season we wait and watch, prepare and hope for the coming of Christ this Christmas.

The Advent wreath will be formed through our prayers as we seek to let light into our lives and the world. You are invited to bring a candle that will contribute to the Advent wreath. Please bring a candle that is encased in glass and place it at one of the welcome desks. You can do this any week during Advent. These will form the prayers of the people as the light grows each week. If you are worshipping online, you might like to ensure that you have a candle to light during this time in worship. You are also invited to keep a prayer journal during the four weeks of Advent.

There is an “Advent at Home” activity to light the way towards Christmas. These are available to download here and at the Welcome Desk.

Call to Worship and Opening Prayer

There is a turning in the season of Advent: as Jacaranda trees paint the streets with colour,
so our hearts prepare to welcome a tiny king.

As homes are decorated and celebrations begin,
so our attention turns to nurturing joy within.

In this time of waiting, in this time of changing,
be with us, Jesus Christ.

In this time of uncertainty and anticipation,
be with us, centre of our being.

In this time of preparation and longing,
be with us, hope of the world.

As we come to worship this day, clothe us in love, shaping our thoughts and actions,
that we may let light into our lives and into the world.

We Sing: Emmanuel Carol

  1. God of light, we are waiting for you.
God of light, we are waiting for you.
God of hope and mercy, God of power and peace.
God of light, we are waiting for you.

  2. We will call you Emmanuel.
    We will call you Emmanuel.
Behold a virgin will give birth to a son.
    We will call you Emmanuel.

  3. Prepare for the reign of our Lord.
Prepare for the reign of our Lord.
God’s rule will be without end, amen.
Prepare for the reign of our Lord.

  4. Maranatha, Lord Jesus, come.
    Maranatha, Lord Jesus, come.
Guide our feet in the way of peace.
    Maranatha, Lord Jesus, come.

Lighting the Advent Wreath – the Candle of Kindness

This week, we light the candle of kindness.
When we show kindness, the world is a brighter place.
When others show kindness to us,
our hearts are warmed, and we know we are loved.
Where there is kindness in the world, God’s light shines.

Loving God,
help us to share kindness with others
and see your light of kindness shining
as we prepare for Christmas.
Amen.

We Sing: Choose Kindness
(1st time children, 2nd time everyone)

When you have a choice to make,
when there are two paths to take,
what will you choose to guide your way,
decisions you make ev’ryday?

Choose kindness, choose tenderness,
choose patience, choose love.
Choose mercy, choose empathy,
walk humbly with your God.
Choose justice, choose faithfulness,
choose wisdom, choose grace.
Choose goodness, choose gentleness,
God’s light will guide your way.

Hills of the North Rejoice

Scripture Readings: Colossians 3:12-17

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The Word of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon

We Sing: Come and Find the Quiet Centre

  1. Come and find the quiet centre
in the crowded life we lead.
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
Clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.

  2. Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
    knows our being, touches base,
    making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
    raising courage when we’re shrinking,
    finding scope for faith begun.

  3. In the Spirit let us travel,
    open to each other’s pain,
let our loves and fears unravel,
    celebrate the space we gain:
There’s a place for deepest dreaming,
there’s a time for heart to care,
    in the Spirit’s lively scheming
there is always room to spare.

Prayers of the People

We Sing: Hold the Light for Me

Hold the light for me;
I need to see
the way you’re leading.
Need has brought me here;
at times I fear
that you’re not near me.
Jesus, you know
a traveller gets weary.
Jesus, please show
the signs of hope more clearly.

Let us centre our thoughts and prayers in Christ and listen for God’s leading as we pray for individuals we particularly care about, holding them in kindness.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

You are invited to write in your prayer journal as the candles are lit.

Bringer of light and life, hear our prayers this day.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

… let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

We Sing: Christ Be Our Light

  1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

  2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
    Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has power to save us.
    Make us your living voice.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

  3. Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
    making your kingdom come.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.
