September 20th, 2020 – Season of Creation
To Bless and be Blessed

We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land on which our church is built.

Season of Creation 2020

Each year, the Brougham Place Community celebrates the Season of Creation. This is a time where we explore an eco-theology: our relationship with the Creator, our part in all of creation, our role as co-creators with God.

This Season of Creation our theme is To Bless and Be Blessed. You are invited to offer gratitude for the gifts of creation and also to be a gift to creation – to serve and protect it. You are invited to see more deeply the blessings of creation and to act to bless creation. This time in our history requires us to step up and hear God’s call to be caretakers, to love and serve creation more than ever before.

During 2020, COVID has resulted in significant travel restrictions. Many travel plans have been cancelled, changed, delayed. This has brought significant grief for many. It has also brought an opportunity to notice the beauty that surrounds us closer to home. People have walked, explored and appreciated our neighbourhoods and national parks in new and different ways. Members of BPUC have contributed photographs to share that have been collected from such times.

As part of the Season of Creation you are invited to share in Spiritual Disciplines during the week. These are available online – https://www.bpuc.org/season-of-creation-2020/ – and in hard copy form. These are invitations to be blessed and to bless creation, to notice and pay attention to that which surrounds us.

May this be a season joy and blessing, challenge and renewal, hope and new life.

Call to Worship

Opening Prayer

God of Creation,
as faithfully as our planet makes its way around the sun,
and we are gifted sunrise and sunset:
So faithful is your love for the world.

As certain as the moon and stars that illuminate our night,
and the ocean tides ebb and flow onto our shores:
So certain is your love for us.

As surely as rivers run, forests reach for the sky,
and ants scurry into their nests when it rains:
So steadfast is your love for all of creation.
With grateful hearts, we worship you.

We Sing: Come One, Come All

  1. Let all the earth come join the song
and join the dance for all belong.
    Creation beats with willing hearts,
so come on saints, let’s play our part.

    Come one, come all
    to life that’s whole
    come one, come all
    to love that’s full.

  2. The hills and rivers sound their praise
and we join in for our God reigns.
Come to the table eat your fill.
Come rest by living waters still.

    Come one, come all
    to life that’s whole
    come one, come all
    to love that’s full.

  3. So take your place and know you’re loved
and spread the word, for there’s enough
to know our God and truly live
    creation was made for this.

    Come one, come all
    to life that’s whole
    come one, come all
    to love that’s full. (repeat)

  4. So take your place and know you’re loved
and spread the word for there’s enough
to know our God and truly live
    creation was made for this.

God gives great, x x

Scripture Reading: Psalm 148:1-13

Leader: Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise God in the heights!
Praise God, all the angels;
praise God, all God’s host!

Choir: Praise God, sun and moon;
praise God, all you shining stars!
Praise God, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for God commanded and they were created.
God established them for ever and ever;
and fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

Congregation: Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea monsters and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and frost,
stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars!
Wild animals and all cattle,
creeping things and flying birds!

All: Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and women alike,
old and young together!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for God’s name alone is exalted;
God’s glory is above earth and heaven.
Praise the Lord!

Leader: God’s wisdom in Scripture.
All: Thanks be to God.

We Sing: Jubilate Deo

First time sung in unison, and then sung as a canon.

Jubilate Deo, omnis terra.
Servite Domino in laetitia.
Alleluia, alleluia, in laetitia;
alleluia, alleluia, in laetitia.

(translation: Rejoice in God, all the earth:
serve the Lord in gladness.)

Prayers of the People

… and now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying…

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin
against us.
Save us in the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

We Sing: God of Creation

  1. God of Creation,
    Gentle life-giver,
    present at birth, and
    all through our days.
    Author of sunrise,
    Song in the night sky,
    here in this place, we
    offer our praise.

  2. Jesus, companion,
    teacher and healer
    friend of the grieving,
    suffering, the poor.
    Stand with your people,
    whisper among us
    promise of mercy,
    goodness for all.

  3. Spirit of Comfort
    blow through Creation,
    stir up new life, breathe
    peace through our world.
    Healer of hearts, and
    hope for tomorrow,
    weave all our sorrows
    into new dawn.

  4. Here we give thanks for
    life in its fullness,
    blessings received
    your gifts to us all.
    Make us a people
    filled with compassion
    selflessly giving
    serving your world.
