The Fourth Sunday of Advent
December 19th, 2021
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land on which our church is built.

Welcome to Worship

In this Advent season we wait and watch, prepare and hope for the coming of Christ this Christmas.

The Advent wreath will be formed through our prayers as we seek to let light into our lives and the world. You are invited to bring a candle that will contribute to the Advent wreath. Please bring a candle that is encased in glass and place it at one of the welcome desks. You can do this any week during Advent. These will form the prayers of the people as the light grows each week. If you are worshipping online, you might like to ensure that you have a candle to light during this time in worship. You are also invited to keep a prayer journal during the four weeks of Advent.

There is an “Advent at Home” activity to light the way towards Christmas and a wish list for donations to Uniting Care North Adelaide. These are available to download here and at the Welcome Desk.

Call to Worship

We Sing: Joy to the World

  1. Joy to the world! The Lord is come;
    let earth receive its king;
    let every heart prepare him room,
    and heaven and nature sing,
    and heaven and nature sing,
    and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

  2. Joy to the earth! The Saviour reigns;
    let us our songs employ;
    while fields and streams, rocks, hills and plains
    repeat the sounding joy,
    repeat the sounding joy,
    repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

  3. He rules the world with truth and grace,
    and makes the nations prove
    the glories of his righteousness
    and wonders of his love,
    and wonders of his love,
    and wonders, wonders of his love.

Together in Song #268. Isaac Watts, 1674 – 1748 alt. Based on Psalm 98. Public Domain.

Lighting the Advent Wreath – the Candle of Compassion

Compassion means to feel for another person, creature or the earth, when they are hurt or sad, or suffering.

It means letting our hearts be moved and then acting to help.

When we care God’s light shines.

Loving God,
you made all people, all creatures and all the earth.
You love all people, all creatures and all the earth.
Help us to act with compassion in places where there is hurting or loneliness.
Help us to shine your light and bring hope as we prepare for Christmas.
Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 1:39-45 including Magnificat by Rosemary Nairn

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country,where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’ Mary sang a song of praise.

Nativity: Leave the Light On

We Sing: There was a Light On

There was a light on,
and hope burned bright.
There was a light on,
what a welcome sight.
Keep the light on
to show hope is home.
Always a light on
where God’s love is shown.

We Sing: Christ Be Our Light

  1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
    Longing for truth, we turn to you.
    Make us your own, your holy people,
    light for the world to see.

    Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
    Shine in your church gathered today.

  2. Longing for food, many are hungry.
    Longing for water, many still thirst.
    Make us your bread, broken for others,
    shared until all are fed.

    Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
    Shine in your church gathered today.

  3. Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
    Longing for warmth, many are cold.
    Make us your building, sheltering others
    walls made of living stone.

    Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
    Shine through the darkness.
    Christ, be our light!
    Shine in your church gathered today.

Prayers of the People

Hold the light for me;
I need to see
the way you’re leading.
Need has brought me here;
at times I fear
that you’re not near me.
Jesus, you know
a traveller gets weary.
Jesus, please show
the signs of hope more clearly.

Let us centre our thoughts and prayers in Christ and listen for God’s leading as we bring our concerns for our world, the earth, and God’s purposes.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

You are invited to write prayers in your prayer journal as the candles are lit. If you are near a child you are invited to talk about your prayers.

…Bringer of light and life, hear our prayers this day.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

…And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

We Sing: Star Child

  1. Star-Child, earth-child, go-between of God,
    love Child, Christ Child, heaven’s lightning rod:
    This year, this year, let the day arrive
    when Christmas comes for everyone,
    everyone alive.

  2. Hope-for-peace Child, God’s stupendous sign,
    down-to-earth Child, Star of stars that shine:
    This year, this year, let the day arrive
    when Christmas comes for everyone,
    everyone alive.
