We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional carers of the land on which our church is built.

Looking Inward… Looking Outward – An invitation in Lent

Inner nurture, reflection, thought shaping, stillness and centring are all notions aligned with the season of Lent. It is a time that invites us to turn our attention inwards; to the ways in which faith is shaping the contours of our heart and mind.

It is also a time that invites us to pay attention to the world around us; to turn our attention outwards. The season invites us to orient our lives towards God’s hopes and loving intentions for the world. It is an invitation to see clearly and act courageously.

Looking Inward… Looking Outward will guide our Lenten journey this year. This will happen in many ways throughout worship and through the daily devotions. We are invited to consider the scripture passage through occupying the text through the eyes of Jesus. The scripture text is included below for your own contemplation and reference. We are invited to consider our own needs and the needs of the world. We are invited to notice the gifts around us and the gifts we bring. We are invited to shape and be shaped, inwardly and outwardly.

John 3:14-21

And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.

Prelude: We Limit Not the Truth of God

Welcome

Lighting of the Candles and Introit: Come, My Way, My TruthRalph V Williams

Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 107)

People of God, draw near;
enter into the frame;
look inwards and look outwards.
We give thanks to the Lord,
for God is good;
God’s steadfast love endures forever.

The Spirit blows across the face of the earth
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
We come to offer thanksgiving and praise;
to tell of God’s deeds with songs of joy.

Come, let us worship God!

Prayer of Invocation

We Sing: Come Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirt.
Maranatha!
Come, Lord, come.

* Maranatha comes from Aramaic, meaning ‘Our Lord, come’ or ‘Our Lord has come’ (1Cor 16:22)

Inside the Frame of Scripture

Sermon

We Sing: Love Is Your Way

  1. Love is your way,
    love is your nature,
    blessing each creature,
    lighting each day;
    grace is your sign,
    gift of forgiveness,
    chalice that changes
    water to wine –

    Refrain:
    God in your grace,
    God in your mercy,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world!

  2. Pathways we choose,
    undeserved freedom,
    earth as our kingdom,
    still we abuse
    much we have done,
    gross human error,
    misuse of power
    darkens the sun –

    Refrain:
    God in your grace,
    God in your mercy,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world!

  3. Terror and tears,
    wounds without healing,
    heart without feeling
    mirror our fears:
    life without trust,
    greed and high prices,
    conflict and crisis
    grind us to dust –

    Refrain:
    God in your grace,
    God in your mercy,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world!

  4. Let us stand still,
    look at each other,
    sister and brother
    thwarting your will:
    teach us good care,
    grace to seek pardon,
    reclaim your garden,
    riches to share –

    Refrain:
    God in your grace,
    God in your mercy,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world,
    turn us to you
    to transform the world!

Prayers of the People

…And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin
against us.
Save us in the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Looking inward… Looking outward

We Sing: Go Now in Peace

Go now in peace,
go now in peace,
may the love of God surround you
everywhere, everywhere you may go.
